To Jute, or Not to Jute – An Honest Review

Are you obsessed with rugs like me? If you’re looking for a new rug, then you might be wondering what is a jute rug or can you clean jute rugs? Wonder no more, this jute rug review will answer all your questions!

    Jute Rug Review

There’s something about rugs that really make a space feel finished. A nice sized area rug can help anchor the furniture in a room which creates a cozy, comfortable space. If it were up to me, I would have a rug in every single room of the house!

I partnered with Overstock to make my jute rug dreams come true, and I couldn’t be happier with the quality of this rug! I’ve always loved the look of natural fiber rugs but was worried the texture of the material wouldn’t be as great in real life as it looked on Pinterest.

I’ll be honest, I was a little skeptical on how a jute rug would hold up in our home. Especially with a 75lb pup running around!

I am happy to report that this jute beauty is now my absolute favorite rug! Today I am sharing all the details about the Safavieh Casual Natural Jute rug.

Spoiler alert: I absolutely love it!

    What Is A Jute Rug?

Jute (which is also known as hessian) is a naturally occurring fiber from a vegetable plant.  This fiber is traditionally spun into course strands which can used to make goods such as burlap, and jute rugs. Jute rugs are handwoven from these natural hessian strands.

The best jute rugs are made from high quality natural fibers, and are woven very tightly to form a beautiful yet durable rug.

    Can You Clean Jute Rugs?

Yes, you can clean jute rugs. The dust and dirt from everyday usage is relatively easy to clean from a jute rug.  Jute’s natural fibers are excellent at capturing dirt, dust and debris.

The captured dirt works its way through the rug and ends up being conveniently hidden beneath the rug until you are ready to clean. Take the rug outside and shake it throughly for cleaning.

For a large jute rug with furniture on top, it might be easier to lift each side and clean the underside with a broom, or vacuum.

Between cleanings, we use a vacuum to clean the top of the rug, and remove any ‘shedding’ fibers. Jute rugs are perfect for high traffic areas because they are great at absorbing dirt and crumbs without it showing. Meaning, they always look clean, even when they aren’t.

Cleaning intervals for a jute rug should be anywhere from weekly to monthly (or longer) depending on usage.  In very low traffic areas, cleaning intervals could be significantly longer.

How To Remove a Stain From A Jute Rug

Severe spills and stains are more difficult to deal with, but it is possible to remove most spills and stains from a jute rug. I recommend cleaning using the Capture Dry Cleaning Kit.

Start out by sprinkling dry cleaning powder on the stain, and scrub vigorously with the included scrub brush. Once you’ve finished scrubbing, use a vacuum to remove the powder (and hopefully the stain) from the jute rug.

If the dry rub doesn’t work on a tough stain, try using the Soil Release Pre-Mist before scrubbing with the dry powder. This should be sufficient for most stains.

I Love The Cozy Neutral Texture

Cozy, Neutral, Texture. Those three words pretty much sum up my entire decor style. I love the texture that the Safavieh Casual Natural Jute Rug brought to our dining room.  The texture brings a three-dimensional feel to the room while feel cozy at the same time.

If you have a space that feels stark and empty, a jute rug would make a great addition! The natural look is classic and practical and neutral color is easy to coordinate with other decor pieces.  This makes it easy to switch up the decor in a room as often (or infrequently) as you choose.

If you have an addiction to woven baskets (yep, me too!) jute rugs are like having that basket-look spread out over your floor.

I honestly have no idea how overstock can sell this jute rug for so cheap. The quality of the rug has exceeded my expectations, so I seriously doubt that paying more for different jute rug would be a good value.

    Are Jute Rugs Soft?

Yes, jute rugs are soft and comfy! This was the question I was most concerned about before my jute rug arrived. I was afraid the material would be scratchy and uncomfortable under my feet.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s actually the exact opposite. The woven texture isn’t scratchy at all and, in my opinion, it actually feels really good to walk on. The soft but firm texture almost feels like a gentle foot massage with those nubby knots.

Don’t get me wrong, its not a texture I would want to curl up on to take a nap, but it is definitely a comforting feeling under tired feet.

    A Thin Jute Rug Option

Although I love the Safavie Chunky Jute Rug, it isn’t the best choice for every room. The thickness and chunkiness is what I love about the rug, but it isn’t ideal for some room types. In certain areas a thin jute rug might be better suited.

I put this thin 5FT by 8Ft Natural Woven Jute Rug from World Market in our home office, and let me tell you, I absolutely love it! My office chair is able to roll on top of this rug, which is why I chose it. So far, it has held up great. I highly recommend this rug for any room in your home that might benefit from choosing a thin rug.
